Ch (छ्).—The second consonant of the palatal class of consonants (चवर्ग (cavarga)), which is possessed of the properties श्वास, अघोष, मह्याप्राण (śvāsa, aghoṣa, mahyāprāṇa) and कण्ठविवृतकारित्व (kaṇṭhavivṛtakāritva). छ् (ch), placed at the beginning of affixes, is mute; while ईय् (īy) is substituted for छ् (ch) standing at the beginning of taddhita affixes; cf. P. I. 3.7 and VII. 1.2. छ् (ch) at the end of roots has got ष् (), substituted for it: cf. P. VIII. 2.36.
