The act of Digging (in Sanskrit Khanana) refers to one of the seven ways to purify the temple precincts (due to “ominous happenings”), according to the Vishnu-Samhita: an important Tantric work of Kerala authored by Sumati, composed between 11th and 14th century divided in to 30 chapters (patalas).—The expiatory rites are elucidated in the 25th chapter. The Viṣṇu-saṃhitā suggest seven kinds of purification (sthānaśudhi) for averting certain impurities [e.g., digging (khanana)] [...]. The text further recommended various mantras to be used for expiations.
