Source: Shodhganga: Expiatory Rites in Keralite Tantra (p)The act of Digging (in Sanskrit Khanana) refers to one of the seven ways to purify the temple precincts (due to “ominous happenings”), according to the Vishnu-Samhita: an important Tantric work of Kerala authored by Sumati, composed between 11th and 14th century divided in to 30 chapters (patalas).—The expiatory rites are elucidated in the 25th chapter. The Viṣṇu-saṃhitā suggest seven kinds of purification (sthānaśudhi) for averting certain impurities [e.g., digging (khanana)] [...]. The text further recommended various mantras to be used for expiations.
Pancaratra (पाञ्चरात्र, pāñcarātra) represents a tradition of Hinduism where Narayana is revered and worshipped. Closeley related to Vaishnavism, the Pancaratra literature includes various Agamas and tantras incorporating many Vaishnava philosophies.
