Sanskrit text and transliteration:
प्रत्यक्षेण हि दृश्येते विद्याविद्ये मनोगते ।
न तयोरात्मधर्मत्वं तस्मात्ते नामरूपयोः ॥ ५७८ ॥
pratyakṣeṇa hi dṛśyete vidyāvidye manogate |
na tayorātmadharmatvaṃ tasmātte nāmarūpayoḥ || 578 ||
English translation of verse 2.578:
Both knowledge and ignorance which inhere in the mind are cognized, indeed, by perception. Therefore, both of them arc not the attributes of the Self. They belong to the sphere of name and form.
Notes:
This verse refutes the second alternative.
Knowledge and ignorance are inherent in the internal organ which is a product of avidyā. So they are not the attributes of the Self, but of the internal organ.
Knowledge and ignorance must be brought under the category of name and form. Ānandagiri says that the expression nāma-rūpa refers to the beginningless ajñāna (nāma-rūpaśabdena anādyajñānamucyate). Knowledge and ignorance are inherent in the internal organ which must be included in the category of nāma-rūpa projected by avidyā. So they, too, must be viewed as name and form.
