Dvādaśamūrtilakṣaṇavidhāna (द्वादशमूर्तिलक्षणविधान) (lit. “procedure regarding the mantras addressed to the twelve mūrtis”) is the name of the fourth chapter of the Nāradīyasaṃhitā: a Pāñcarātra document comprising over 3000 verses in 30 chapters presenting in a narrative framework the teachings of Nārada to Gautama, dealing primarily with modes of worship and festivals.—Description of the chapter [dvādaśamūrtilakṣaṇavidhāna]: Nārada here turns to a treatment of the twelve mantras addressed to Viṣṇu, et al., their mastery by the devotee and the “feel” of the deities’ presence by one who has effected control of them by his mantra-mastery. Some attention is also given to the phala-rewards that accrue to one employing each mantra successfully—including the “prayogic” uses of each. The mantras are not clearly named, but are simply taken up in order and referred to as “the first,” “the second,” ( ...up to ) the “twelfth” (1-20a, 20b-24a, 24b-31, 32-34, 35-38, 39-41a, 41b-47a, 47-54, 55-60a, 60b-67, 68-73, 74-81). The closing remarks (82-85) briefly turn to the subsidiary aṅgamantra—forms of the twelve.
