Hanuman Nataka (critical study)

by Nurima Yeasmin | 2015 | 41,386 words

Summary: This is an English study of the Hanuman-nataka written by Shri Damodara Mishra in the 11th century and based on the Ramayana story. The Hanumannataka is a Mahanataka—a fourteen-act Sanskrit drama dealing with the story of Rama and Hanumat (Hanuman). It presents the events from Rama’s birth up to the death of Ravana, but also includes the coronation of Rama and the exile of his wife, Sita.

The character of Hanuman is introduced as the son of Anjana and Vayu (the God of the Winds), while his name means “the person with a cheekbone”. In act 6 of the drama he is depicted as a messenger between Rama and Sita, who was abducted into Lanka.
