Iyengar is a title given to Brahmins of Tamil origin who follow the Visishtadvaita philosophy. Iyengar is derived from "Ayya a Prakrit" along with "Garu".

Some believe that the word "Iyengar" means one who is characterized by five attributes (Aindu angangal).
