Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationJyeṣṭhaputra (ज्येष्ठपुत्र) refers to the “eldest son”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.3.34 (“The Story of Anaraṇya”).—Accordingly, after king Anaraṇya was advised: “[...] Anaraṇya went to the forest, performed great penance, and worshipped Śiva with devotion. In the end, he attained Śivaloka free from all ailments. The eldest son (jyeṣṭhaputra) of the king, Kīrtimān, virtuously ruled over the kingdom and tended the subjects like his own children”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
