Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationMahīsāgara (महीसागर) refers to the “Mahī river”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.4.7 (“Commencement of the War”).—Accordingly, as Brahmā narrated to Nārada: “On hearing the celestial voice, the gods became enthusiastic. Fearlessly they roared like heroes. With their fear subsided, and keeping Kumāra ahead, the gods went to the confluence of the river Mahī (mahīsāgara-saṃgama) and the ocean desirous of fighting. Immediately Tāraka, along with a great army, came to the place where the gods stood and was surrounded by them in a body. [...]”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
