Purana and Itihasa (epic history)

When he heard that Mahāviṣṇu had cut off the head of his father he went to the banks of the river Gautamī and practised severe penance. As a result of that Rāhu, his father, got a place among the other planets in the sky. (Chapter 142, Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa).
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
