It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words Muṣkaka (Schrebera swietenioides) and ādi, translating to “first” or “commencement”. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Muṣkaka, Palāśa, Dhava, Citraka, Madana, Śiṃśapā and Triphalā, etc. The collection of herbs named Muṣkakādi is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
