The name is derived from the words mūtra, translating to “urine”, and virecanīya, referring to “purgative”. It is a technical term used throughout Āyurveda. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Vṛkṣādanī (Cascuta), Aśvadaṃṣṭrā (Tribulus terrestris), Vaśira (Cleome viscosa) and Pāṣāṇabheda (Bryophyllum calycinum).
