Source: archive.org: The Elephant Lore of the HindusNāgotpatti (नागोत्पत्ति) refers to the “origin of elephants”, according to the 15th century Mātaṅgalīlā composed by Nīlakaṇṭha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 1, “on the origin of elephants”]: “20. [As sage Pālakāpya said to king Romapāda]: ‘[...] Know, King of Aṅga, that I am that hermit Pālakāpya, son of Sāmagāyana!’—Thus addressed by that excellent sage, the King of Aṅga was greatly amazed. Then the sage, questioned further by that king with regard to elephants, told the prince about the origin of elephants (nāgotpatti), their favorable and other marks, their medical treatment, and other things, one after another”.
