Source: Shodhganga: The saurapurana - a critical studyNaimittikapralaya (नैमित्तिकप्रलय) is another name for Naimittika (“dissolution at the end of the kalpa”), and is related to Pratisarga (“creation or evolution of the Universe”), representing one of the various aspects of the Pañcalakṣaṇa definition of Purāṇas, according to Amarakoṣa: the famous Sanskrit lexicon of the 5th Century A.D.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
