Source: Shodhganga: The saurapurana - a critical studyNavasarga (नवसर्ग) refers to the “nine-fold creation”, according to the 10th century Saurapurāṇa: one of the various Upapurāṇas depicting Śaivism.—In the Mahābhārata (Śantiparva 298.16-25) there is a reference to nine-fold creation. Probably following the footsteps of the Mahābhārata the Purāṇas developed this idea of ‘navasarga’ and started giving accounts of creation on this line.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
