Source: Wisdom Library: Elements of Hindu IconograpyJust as the weaver is the efficient cause (nimittakāraṇa), the Niṣkalā-Śiva is the efficient cause of the universe composed of the moveable and immoveable objects. The immoveable objects consist of such things as the mountains, and the moveable, of things like paśu (here used in the technical sense of animals endowed with souls; man covered with ignorance). Souls have sūkṣma-śarīras (subtle bodies) and bhuvana-śariras (material regional bodies).
Shilpashastra (शिल्पशास्त्र, śilpaśāstra) represents the ancient Indian science (shastra) of creative arts (shilpa) such as sculpture, iconography and painting. Closely related to Vastushastra (architecture), they often share the same literature.
