Source: archive.org: Nilamata Purana: a cultural and literary studyRaṅgajīvī (रङ्गजीवी) refers to “professional actors” as mentioned in the Nīlamata-purāṇa.—It would appear from Nīlamata that dramatic performances were common in the valley and generally popular with the Kashmiris. There are allusions to professional actors or Raṅgajīvīs. There are also special references to the “gift of performances” (Prekṣādāna) by actors on special days. On Trayodaśī, it is said, actors should offer free plays according to their means.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
