Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationRathanirmāṇa (रथनिर्माण) refers to the “creation of the chariot” (built by Viśvakarman), according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.5.7 (“The gods pray”).—Accordingly, as Vyāsa said to Sanatkumāra: “O Sanatkumāra, of good intellect, O omniscient one, O foremost among the devotees of Śiva, this wonderful story of lord Śiva has been narrated to us. Now please mention the structure of the chariot (rathanirmāṇa) which consisted of all the gods and which had been made by the intelligent Viśvakarman”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
