It performs the functions like reception of food, its digestion through the activation of ‘Agni’, its divisioninto useful and waste parts and its onward propulsion (Aṣṭāṅgahṛdayasaṃhitā Sūtrasthāna 12/8). All these functions are either those of parasympathetic nerves supplying the gut or those of enteric nervous system.
The ‘Samāna Vāta’ stimulates ‘Jaṭharāgni’. This ‘Agni’ finally digests the food (Carakasaṃhitā Cikitsāsthāna 15/6, 7). After the food reaches stomach, several digestive juices act on it. Gastric juice, pancreatic juice, and enterocytes in the intestines—all contain important digestive enzymes and act on food. Secretion of these enzymes is mostly under the control of parasympathetic nerves and intrinsic enteric nervous system. This is how ‘Samāna Vāta’ stimulates ‘Agni’.
