In Hinduism
Kavyashastra (science of poetry)
Source: Shodhganga: The Kavyavilasa of Ciranjiva Bhattacarya (kavyashastra)Sāmānyaviśeṣa (सामान्यविशेष) refers to one of the 93 alaṃkāras (“figures of speech”) mentioned by Cirañjīva Bhaṭṭācārya (fl. 17th century) in his Kāvyavilāsa and is listed as one of the 89 arthālaṃkāras (figure of speech determined by the sense, as opposed to sound).—Ancient Ālaṃkārikas like Bhāmaha, Udbhaṭa and Daṇḍin have not treated the figure sāmāvyaviśeṣa. Modern Ālaṃkārikas like Mammaṭa (K.P.X/134), Ruyyaka (A.S.P. 169), Viśvanātha (X/16), Jagannātha (R.G. P. 696) have treated sāmānya as a figure. But Cirañjīva has dealt with a new figure named sāmāvyaviśeṣa. Perhaps this is a new addition to the list of figure of speech.
When a particular statement is made to imply a general statement which is under discussion it is the figure sāmānyaviśeṣa. Cirañjīva defines—“syātsāmānyaviśeṣoktāvalaṅkāraḥ sa eva hi”.
Example of the sāmānyaviśeṣa-alaṃkāra:—
dhigaho! kāmīpuruṣānalaṃ paruṣakarmiṇaḥ |
jīvitānyapi muñcanti yadamī kāminīkṛte ||“Oh! Fie on the fire of wrath of lustful persons! They, performer of cruel deeds, sacrifice even their lives for the sake of their beloved”.
Notes: Here the intended meaning is that the lustful persons sacrifice everything for their beloved. It is a general statement. To imply this a particular statement that the lustful persons sacrifice their life is made. The sacrifice of everything is stated generally and the sacrifice of life is presented as a particular. For the statement of particular to indicate the general the figure is sāmānyaviśeṣa.
Kavyashastra (काव्यशास्त्र, kāvyaśāstra) refers to the ancient Indian tradition of poetry (kavya). Canonical literature (shastra) of the includes encyclopedic manuals dealing with prosody, rhetoric and various other guidelines serving to teach the poet how to compose literature.
