When the collective sense is given by a combination of words it is called पदार्थ (padārtha), and when the idea is complete it is called वाक्यार्थ (vākyārtha). Sometimes the meaning of a compound word is taken individually and not. collectively; such a meaning is called संघातविगृहीतार्थ (saṃghātavigṛhītārtha) cf. नामाख्यातग्रहणं संघातविगृहीतार्थं द्रष्टव्यम् (nāmākhyātagrahaṇaṃ saṃghātavigṛhītārthaṃ draṣṭavyam) M. Bh. on IV. 3.72 Vart. 1.
Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas.
