saptaskandha (सप्तस्कंध).—m pl S The seven divisions or regions of the Wind. As a curious specimen of Hindu anemography or anemosophy these divisions are presented; viz. āvaha (also written avā) the wind which, rising from the ground, reaches to the clouds; pravā the wind from the clouds to the sun; udvaha the third wind; saha that from the moon to the stars; vaiva that from the stars to Saturn; ṣaṭhāparā that from Saturn to the saptaṛṣi or Ursa major; parivāhā that from Ursa major to dhuru the Polar star--the uttermost star (according to the Puraṇs) of the universe.
