Source: Shodhganga: Elements of Art and Architecture in the Trtiyakhanda of the Visnudharmottarapurana (gita)The Speedy Tempo (in Indian Music) is denoted by the Sanskrit term Druta, according to the Nāṭyaśāstra.—In the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, the laya i.e., the tempo of Music is also determined according to the sentiments. According to the Nāṭyaśāstra, laya or tempo is made according to the time of kalās. Kalā arises from the collection of mātrās. The time period of one mātrā is calculated with five nimeṣas i.e., five times blinking of eyes. The Nāṭyaśāstra accepts three kinds of layas viz., speedy (=druta), middle (= madhyamā) and slow (= vilambita).
Gitashastra (गीतशास्त्र, gītaśāstra) refers to the ancient Indian science of Music (gita or samgita), which is traditionally divided in Vocal music, Instrumental music and Dance (under the jurisdiction of music).
