General definition (in Hinduism)
Source: eScholarship: Pragmatic Ritual in the Magic TantrasStambhanama (स्तम्भनम, “immobilization”) is the name of a topic dealt with in the first section (vāśīkaraṇa, “subjugation”) of the Kalpacintāmaṇi (also titled the Yantracintāmaṇi)—an abhicāra text which fits clearly in the six results or magic Tantra genre.—The vāśīkaraṇa section is not purely about subjugation rites; in fact, it includes various rituals including bewildering, pacification of anger, conquering, immobilization (stambhanama), and others. This first section and topic incorporates many types of six results type rituals. The pacification section is a big ambiguous because pacification is often destruction.
