Sthūlāṅga (स्थूलाङ्ग) refers to the “stout body” (of certain distinguished elephants), according to the 15th century Mātaṅgalīlā composed by Nīlakaṇṭha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 1, “on the origin of elephants”]: “[...] The elephant called ‘slow’ is said by the sages to be born in the tretā age and the cool season; [...] he is an elephant in whom phlegm predominates, has large curved tusks, is distinguished by a stout (sthūlāṅga) round body, is lustful, and responds (only) to profound (harsh) stimuli”.
