Tārādibījākṣarasvarūpatadarthavarṇana (तारादिबीजाक्षरस्वरूपतदर्थवर्णन) (lit. “concerning the significance, form and the basic letters of the ‘tāra’ (and other) mantras”) is the name of the fifty-first chapter of the Ahirbudhnyasaṃhitā, a Pāñcarātra work in 60 chapters dealing with topics such as Viṣṇu’s discus-power, the processes of creation and esoteric practices related to Sudarśana (such as mantras and yantras).—Description of the chapter [tārādibījākṣarasvarūpatadarthavarṇana]: Nārada asks to know about the tāramantra and some others (1-6). Ahirbudhnya replies that to one who understands the mantras, they become so much the more efficacious. He then begins his discussion by pointing out that mantras have three aspects—their sthūla, sūkṣma, and para forms (1-10). He turns then to the praṇava syllable, saying that each of the letters comprising “AUM” is presided over by Saṃkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna and Aniruddha respectively and that these give to it its special potency (11-53). Continuing with the tāramantra, he then discusses the sthūla, sūkṣma and para aspects of it (51-69). The concluding lines give a resumé of what he has just covered (70-81a).
