Source: archive.org: Puranic EncyclopediaUjjānaka (उज्जानक).—The Āśrama of Ārṣṭiṣeṇamaharṣi was situated near Mount Gandhamādana in front of Mānasa lake. Ujjānaka was a lake near the āśrama. A dip in the waters of the lake, it was believed, would wash off all sins. (Mahābhārata Anuśāsana Parva, Chapter 25, Verse 35).
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
