Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationVādayat (वादयत्) refers to “playing (on various musical instruments)”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.3.47 (“The ceremonious entry of Śiva”).—Accordingly, as Brahmā narrated to Nārada: “[...] With the lord in front, all of them entered the palace of Himavat playing (vādayat) on various musical instruments and exhibiting their eagerness. The Brahmins sent by Himavat and the excellent mountains enthusiastically went ahead of Śiva. The great royal umbrella was held aloft over the great lord. He was fanned by chowries and a canopy was spread over Him. [...]”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
