Accordingly as Brahmā narrated to Nārada:—“[...] on hearing the enquiry of Satī Śiva was delighted and He narrated them with pleasure in their entirety for raising the worldly creatures. [...] The duties of sons, wives etc. and their greatness, the imperishable system of Varṇas and Āśramas, the medical lore (viz., vaidyaśāstra), and the astral lore, all beneficent to worldly creatures were explained by him”.

The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
