The work is based on the Astadhyayi of Panini without omitting a single Sutra. The main topics or Prakaranas are twelve in number, viz. (1) संज्ञापरिभाषा (saṃjñāparibhāṣā), (2) पञ्चसंधि (pañcasaṃdhi), (3) सुबन्त (subanta) or षड्लिङ्ग (ṣaḍliṅga), (4) स्त्रीप्रत्यय (strīpratyaya), (5) कारक (kāraka), (6) समास (samāsa), (7) तद्धित (taddhita), (8) तिङन्त (tiṅanta), (9) प्रक्रिया (prakriyā), (10) कृदन्त (kṛdanta), (11) वैदिकी (vaidikī) and (12) स्वर (svara) which are sometimes styled as व्याकरणद्वादशी (vyākaraṇadvādaśī). The work is generally known by the term सिद्धान्तकौमुदी (siddhāntakaumudī), or even कौमुदी (kaumudī), and it has got a large number of scholarly and ordinary commentaries as also commentaries on commentaries, all numbering above twelve, and two abridgments the Madhyakaumudi and the Laghukaumudi. The work was written by the reputed scholar Bhattoji Diksita of Varanasi in the seventeenth century. See Bhattoji Diksita.
