Vallīsavarṇana (वल्लीसवर्णन) refers to “chain-reduction”, according to the Triśatībhāṣya: an anonymous commentary on the Sanskrit arithmetic text Triśatī by Śrīdhara (ca. 800 CE).—Vallīsavarṇana (chain-reduction) is a rule for unifying quantities expressed in several units into the highest one, but the usage of the rule in the Triśatībhāṣya is slightly different.—Verse 26cd-27ab prescribes the rule for the ‘chain-reduction’ as follows:—“In the ‘chain-reduction,’ [kurvīta savarṇane vallyāḥ] one should multiply the former (the upper) denominator and numerator by the denominator located below. On the former (the upper) numerator, one should make the numerator located below positive [or] negative”.
