Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)
Source: Wikisource: A dictionary of Sanskrit grammarVarṇaukadeśa (वर्णौकदेश).—A part or a portion of a combined letter i.e.संयुक्तस्वर (saṃyuktasvara) or संयुक्तव्यञ्जन (saṃyuktavyañjana). The diphthongs or संयुक्तस्वर (saṃyuktasvara)s are divisible into two Svaras, for instance ऐ (ai) into आ (ā) and ए, औ (e, au) into आ (ā) and ओ. Similarly double consonants like क्कू, च्च्, क्म्, क्त् (kkū, cc, km, kt) etc. are also divisible. Regarding the point raised whether the individual parts can be looked upon as separate letters for undergoing or causing a grammatical operation, the decision of the grammarians is that they cannot be looked upon as separate, when they are completely mixed as the dipthongs; cf.नाक्यपवृक्तस्यावयवस्य तद्वधिर्यथा द्रव्येषु (nākyapavṛktasyāvayavasya tadvadhiryathā dravyeṣu) M. Bh. on Siva Sutra 3, 4 Vart. 6.
Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
