Source: Journal of South Asian Intellectual History: Samarasiṃha and the Early Transmission of Tājika AstrologyVarṣatantra (वर्षतन्त्र) refers to the second volume of the Tājikanīlakaṇṭhī (authored by Nīlakaṇṭha Daivajña in 1587)—a most popular textbook dealing with the Tājika doctrine: a Sanskritized version of Perso-Arabic astrology sharing a core of pre-Islamic Indian jyotiṣa and Hellenistic astrology.—The work consists of three volumens: Saṃjñātantra (basic principles and terminology), Varṣatantra (annual prognostication) and the received text of the Praśnatantra (interrogations).
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
