General definition (in Hinduism)
Source: Google Books: New Essays in Comparative AestheticsThe Vastusūtra Upaniṣad belongs to a lost tradition of treatises about Hindu temple sculpture and architecture (śilpaśāstra) dealing with principles of composition. Unlike other treatises on śilpa, it exposes principles of sculpture composition and offers a symbolic interpretation of geometrical forms in connection with the upaniṣadic correspondences between the macrocosm and the microcosm. Special attention is paid to the human figure as the best way to attain union with the divine through worship. This text, of an uncertain date but probably oder than most medieval śilpa-śāstra literature, offers the opportunity to illustrate a concrete art theory application of the previously mentioned Upaniṣadic principles. It delineates a sacred geometery as the underlying compositional diagram upon which anthropomorphic images are structured.
