Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanyVīratarvādi (वीरतर्वादि) is the Sanskrit name for a group of medicinal plants, classified as having the property of curing all urinary troubles. It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words Vīrataru (Dichrostachys cinerea) and ādi, translating to “first” or “commencement”. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Vīrataru, Gundra, Nala, Kuśa, Kāśu and Aṣmabhedaka. The collection of herbs named Vīratarvādi is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
