It is supposed to be a place of mokṣa for all living creatures. There are many sacred places and innumerable liṅgas which are even unknown to Brahmā, so says the Saurapurāṇa. [...] The Viśveśvaraliṅga at Vārāṇasī is a Jyotirliṅga.
