Summary: The Vyavaharadhyaya or “chapter on law proper” is the second chapter of the Yajnavalkya-smriti—one of the most influential of Smritis dealing with Dharmashastra (i.e., science of law—jurisprudence). Yajnavalkya recognised Vyavahara (‘law’) as a part of dharma. He describes judicial procedure and discusses complete legal system such as substantive law (i.e., rights and liabilities of parties) and procedural law (i.e., the enforcement of those rights and liabilities).
